Mid-March 2017 Update

Update No. 1 on 2017 Priorities, Systems and Goals

My progress so far…

Systems / Goals
No. 1: Mental and Spiritual Health
Meditate daily
I meditate about 2-3 times per week. Pretty happy with this but will be great to increase weekly frequency to 3-4 times.

Practise yoga daily
I practise yoga about 3-4 times per week. Pretty happy with this, but hope to increase the intensity of my sessions (e.g. deeper stretches, more power movements)

Find meaning in life
(I feel that I should start thinking about and making peace with death... I suppose that would help with finding meaning in life?)

No. 2: Physical Health
Get enough sleep (at least 7 hours a day)

Eat healthily
Pretty happy with this. I have decreased lunch caloric intake by about half these past 2 months.

Really looking to try fasting, but the thought of it is mentally crippling. HOPE TO OVERCOME FEAR OF FASTING.

Be active everyday
I am active almost everyday. Reasonably happy with progress; hope to do more higher-intensity workouts.

Go for a suitable full-body health screening

No. 3: Relationships

Spend quality time with loved ones
No. 4: Career
Stay employed for most parts of the year

Plodding along…

Find a higher-paying job with equally little stress and decent work-life balance

Been on the lookout for new jobs. Turned down a couple of higher-paying offers (which also promise better career prospects) simply because they entailed longer working hours and more responsibilities.

Sometimes I think that I’m a joke. At 27, instead of climbing the career ladder, I’m already winding down (not even sure from what), hoping to semi-retire by 30. I really wish I can muster more career ambition…

I’ve also been entertaining thoughts of going part-time/taking a lower-paying job so that I can qualify to buy a BTO flat (and hopefully also qualify for some grants, etc) with my partner…

No. 5: Finances
Invest at least S$30k in equities by year-end

On track

Increase liquid networth (LNW) by S$60k by year-end

✔ On track

No. 6: EQ
Be more authentic (online and when interacting with others in real life)

Pleased with baby steps taken so far.

A Review of 2016

2016 was a decent year comprising the following achievements:

- developed a daily yoga and meditation practice (my most prized achievement this year!)

- started practising stoicism and mindfulness (still a work in progress)

- converted from a “goals-approach” to a “systems-approach” to keeping fit and healthy (thus enabling me to exercise more and develop a healthier diet in an enjoyable and therefore, sustainable, manner)

- spent a lot of quality time with loved ones

- saved S$50,000 in cash

- read up about insurance and upgraded my integrated shield plan

- overcame analysis paralysis and started investing in the STI and some local bonds

- started an Interactive Brokers account

- developed net-worth and expenses tracking systems and habits

- made some peace with working at a job (still a work in progress)

- updated my CV frequently

- finally decided to “step out of the shadows” (hence this blog)

I hope to spend the next few days charting some sort of direction for 2017.

Enjoy the last few days of 2016, everyone!

Hello everyone! I'm sbzzz, another blogger lumbering into Singapore's personal finance (PF) scene...

I've been a long-time lurker of Singapore's PF scene and after much mulling, I've decided to start journalling my ERE (early retirement extreme) journey. I'm hoping that journalling will help to keep me level-headed in my ERE journey and also give me the opportunity to connect with like-minded people.

A little bit about how I started my ERE journey and my progress thus far:

- started working proper after graduation

- within the first month, concluded that working was modern-day serfdom

- googled for an out and serendipitously stumbled onto ERE and the Singapore PF scene

- ERE and financial independence tenets immediately resonated with me (given my frugal nature) and I decided to embark on my ERE journey

- I've been working full-time for 3 years now... it's... alright… I guess… but I can’t wait to be financially independent and free to do whatever it is I want to do

- my semi-ERE target amount is S$400k in liquid net worth*, after which I will look to scale down from full-time work to at-will part-time work. From then on, I intend to cover my living expenses through part-time work and let the S$400k grow while I embark on a self-discovery phase

*liquid net worth means cash and liquid-type investments (excludes funds locked up in any social security account or endowment plan)

- my final ERE target amount is yet to be determined

- assuming no increase or decrease in income and expenses, I will reach my semi-ERE target amount when I'm 33. But, the mind and flesh are weak, and the thought of working full-time till then is unpalatable

- my goal is to reach my semi-ERE target amount by the time I hit 30 without subjecting myself to intense work stress and long working hours. But as to how I can achieve this goal... I'm still trying to figure it out...

Till the next time!
